Phillip B. McCormick papers, 1827-1903; (bulk, 1859-1903).

Consisting receipts, correspondence, and legal documents re activities of Phillip B. McCormick and family in Robeson County, N.C., Little Rock, Ark., Marion County, S.C., and elsewhere. Although majority of collection pertains to McCormick's time in Robeson County, N.C., he resided in South Carolina for a brief time and served in the First Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, 1861-1862; a letter, 31 July 1861, from John G. Pressley, Kingstree, S.C., informs McCormick that another regiment for Hampton's Legion was to be raised and requests his service and assistance. McCormick's discharge is dated Battery Island, 11 April 1862. Items dating to Reconstruction-era include letter and printed circular, 28 Dec. 1866, from Dr. John B. Ogden, New York, with description of cure for venereal disease; as evidenced by correspondence, McCormick was seeking employment in the Little Rock, Ark., area by 1868. Shortly thereafter, he was in Alfordsville, N.C., from where he wrote "To all whom it may concern" about a liar who had offended him, 14 December 1868. Sworn testimony, 19 Oct. 1868, from J.W. Dillon, Little Rock, Ark., discusses McCormick's eligibility for employment; probate court document, 14 Oct. 1873, indicates that McCormick died intestate; and contract, 19 July 1877, with S.J. Ayres to teach twelve-weeks of school at Gapway Church [Marion County, S.C.]; and genealogical material re the McCormick and Hutto families.
